Details Of BitDefender USB Immunizer

For years, Autorun-based malware has been atop of the worldwide e-threat landscape, with notorious representatives such as Trojan.AutorunInf, the Conficker worm (Win32.Worm.Downadup) or Worm.Autorun.VHD. USB immunizer completely removes any threat from autorun based malwares and infections.

Introduced back in the Windows XP era to facilitate software installations from CD-ROM media for non-technical computer users, the Autorun feature has rapidly become the infection vector of choice for cyber-criminals. The USB immunizer is BitDefender's response to this growing issue. This small utility is divided in two sections.

The Immunize option allows you to immunize your USB storage device or SD card against infections with autorun-based malware. Even if your storage device has been plugged into an infected computer, the piece of malware will be unable to create its autorun.inf file, thus annihilating any chance of auto-launching itself. The Immunize Computer slider allows you to toggle the autorun feature On or Off for any removable media (except for CD/DVD-ROM devices). If you accidentally plug in an infected USB drive that has not been immunized, the computer will not auto-execute the piece of malware located on the USB storage device.

The app completely removes any threat from autorun based malwares and infections.

FAQ
Q: Can I use an immunized USB drive with a portable application launcher?
A: Yes, you can, as long as you don't want the launcher to automatically start when the USB drive is plugged in.

Q: Why am I unable to delete the autorun.inf file the Immunizer has created on my drive?
A: The file is applied special permissions, depending on the file system of your storage device. These special permissions prevent the user or malware from altering the
autorun.inf file.

Q: OK, I need my drive back or I need to create an autorun.inf file. How do I remove the autorun.inf file you have created?
A: You can't delete the file on a Windows-based PC. Instead, we suggest that you boot from a Linux Live CD or use a Mac OS X system to simply delete the file.

Q: What file systems can this tool create the autorun.inf file on?
A: The application currently supports NTFS, FAT32, and FAT file systems.

Q: The USB Immunizer shows me an error. What exactly is going on?
A: Sometimes, the application may encounter errors; these errors are logged in a file created next to your application. If such an incident occurs, please make sure that you're
submitting the file to immunizer@bitdefender.com and we'll work things out for you.

Q: Why are some external hard-disk drives not showing up in Immunizer? Is there something wrong with them?
A: Depending on the hardware, some disk drives actually report that they are fixed disks. BitDefender USB Immunizer only lists removable media, as they are most prone to
autorun.inf infections.

Q: What languages is the USB immunizer available in?
A: The USB immunizer has been translated into English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Thai, Vietnamese, Polish, Farsi, German, French and Romanian.

Q: You said that the USB Immunizer was multilingual. How do I change its language?
A: The USB Immunizer "reads" the "Current Location" in the Region and Language settings and automatically loads the language file that is most appropriate for your system. If there is no translation for the Immunizer available for the region you're in, the UI will automatically default to English.

Q: What does the Computer Immunization setting do?
A: The Computer Immunization setting disables the Registry entry related to Autorun, so as no removable storage device (except for CD & DVD ROM media) to be able to automatically execute a file upon mounting. It also immunizes each system partition with a specially-crafted autorun.inf file.

Q: Can I immunize an USB device on-the-fly as soon as it has been plugged into the computer?
A: Yes, if you have the USB Immunizer running, you may tick the Automatically immunize USB drives box in the Options tab and every non-immunized USB drive plugged into the computer while BitDefender USB Immunizer is running will be automatically immunized.

Note
The tool does not offer to remove the protection from drives that it has immunized. To unprotect a drive you need to display hidden files in Windows and hidden system files. This can be done via Tools > Folder Options > View in Windows Explorer. You then need to delete the folder autorun.ini on the drive.

The tool displays an email prompt on exit with no apparent option to close it. Just click the ok button without entering an email address to close the program for good.
